Hello, this is Mikel with TinyFrog Technologies and today I’d like to talk about how to choose a great domain name for your business. We deal with a lot of startups and companies that are shifting their business models in such a way that they’re in the process of procuring a new domain name. There’s very specific factors that I recommend when considering a domain name, 4 – 5 really important ones.
First factor is – does the domain name relate to your business. Is the domain name something when people hear it or say it, does it directly relate to your business name and/or some of your services and to the primary services that you offer? That’s not necessarily a critical one. But, so for example, our domain name is tinyfrog.com and our business is TinyFrog Technologies. The domain name obviously relates to the business name but it doesn’t necessarily pertain to the services, but at the same time it works really well because it is tied to our business name. The other thing about our domain which works really well is it’s short. We typically recommend keeping the domain name at 15 characters and under if possible. TinyFrog Technologies would be specifically our direct business name but it’s not as easy and short – not as easy to say, repeat, spell, so it has much less characters. So I typically recommend keeping your domain name to under 15 characters.
The other thing is we have a lot of clients that have business names that are difficult to spell. In that case I typically don’t recommend having a domain name that has a difficult word to spell because if people have to think about it or if they spell it wrong, then they probably won’t spend the time searching the domain name. Once again keeping the domain name as short as possible and also keeping the domain name relatively easy to say, this will help because you want people to be able to promote your domain name.
You’ll probably notice there’s not a lot of good names left, they could be gone which can be a problem. But a lot of domain names are for sale through brokers. And they may not be fifteen or twenty dollars, they might be a thousand or two thousand or several thousand dollars. I have clients ask me is it worth it make that investment? And I think it’s definitely worth it. A domain name is a piece of property or an asset. It’s something you will have for years and years and years to come. So if you have to spend two to three thousand dollars for a domain name that’s a much better domain name than the one that is for free or cheap – I strongly recommend investing in a good domain name because it’s something that will stay with your business for the life of the business.
