How Involved Should You Be in a Web Project?
Hi Mikel, great to have you here. First off, as a client, how much involvement should I have in the website? If you were a client, your question is… If you were a client, how much involvement should you have in it?
So client involvement is actually fairly important in a website project. Some clients come to us and it’s a very common question, like what should I do? What’s my involvement? How should I participate? It really is, as a client, it’s your website and you know your business better than we know regardless of how much time we spend on the project.
It’s a very collaborative experience and it’s important for us to leverage your knowledge of your industry, your business, your competitive landscape. So I would say at the very beginning we have a fairly in-depth questionnaire process to gather information about the project. So it’s front loaded with a fair amount of involvement. Beyond that, really client involvement is based on approving approvals, feedback and also providing content which is pretty typical.
Some of the projects will have a content writer involved and they will be responsible for creating content. But even there, as a client, they need to leverage your knowledge of your business in order to give us a really good perspective to work from. Is it possible for a client not to be involved in the creation of a website? Pretty much, no.
We have some clients who want to be very hands off and it actually makes our process really difficult because again, we’re not able to leverage their knowledge of their business. Plus if they’re not involved, they need to be giving us feedback. It’s difficult to kind of ascertain what their preferences are for design and functionality without their involvement.
Generally, it’s probably not a good idea not to be involved or to minimally involved in a project.
