Hello, this is Mikel with Tiny Frog Technologies. If you have a WordPress site, you’re probably aware of the fact that security is an important factor. If your website is not properly secured and/or maintained, you’ll have some issues or potentially have some site issues. In fact, there’s a saying in the WordPress world, if your website is not properly maintained and/or secured, having issues is not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN. So, it’s very important to keep your website secure.
Maintenance Prevents Long-term Issues
The analogy I like to give is if you’re keeping your car tuned up properly, and getting your oil changed with the right frequency. If you skip a couple of oil changes, it’s probably not going to have an impact on your car. But if you go 2-3 years down the road and you’re driving 15,000-20,000 miles a year and you don’t get an oil change, you’ll probably have some long-term big issues that you could have avoided fairly easily by using basic preventative maintenance.
Your website is no different. If you have a WordPress site, if you’re not properly updating it and backing it up, and if you go three, four, five, six, twelve months without dealing with that you’re probably going to have some issues. And those issues could be much bigger than if you were to deal with it more frequently. All in all, WordPress sites require maintenance.
WordPress Plugin Updates
We found it’s very important to update your plugins at least once a month. Getting your plugins updated and maintained typically requires a web developer, so we do have a program and a plan that helps our clients with that. Once again the frequency is fairly important because you don’t want to have those long-term issues.
Google statistically had said that website hacking went up over 35% from 2015 to 2016. It’s probably going to increase again this year, so if your website is not being properly maintained it’s probably fairly vulnerable. If you have a WordPress site, make sure it’s being properly maintained. Make sure those updates are done with a certain frequency. You’ll notice that those updates will come out fairly frequently if you have a number of plugins in your website.
