Hello this is Mikel with TinyFrog Technologies. I want to talk a little bit about designing websites for the tech industry. It could be IT, it could be SaaS, it could be anything related to tech for that matter. In fact we do a lot of websites for tech companies.
One of the things that we find important when working with tech companies is their messaging. Oftentimes tech companies have complex processes, products, approaches or services and it’s difficult for their potential clients to understand. We work with our clients in those industries to help make their content and their messaging more relatable and more understandable for their for their particular audience.
The other thing that’s important for a tech company is obviously a high-tech look and feel but that can mean a lot of different things. We have tech companies that want something very high tech and modern but very conservative. Sometimes they want something that’s more casual and a little bit more interesting, maybe even a little bit more fun for that matter and so the personality of the brand can be a very important part of that approach as well.
Another thing we consider when we’re working with tech companies is that since they want a tech look, there might be some interactions on the website that they find are important but you have to be very very careful with interactions or essentially movement on the website because it can be very distracting. I’ve been to many tech companies websites and they look high-tech but things are moving from all different directions and so many interactions are happening at one time that the website can be very confusing and overwhelming. It’s really important that you’re factoring that into the equation, using dynamic content and interactions in such a way that improve the user experience, without taking away from the user experience.
Many tech companies get so caught up in talking about their processes and their products/services that they forget about the importance of the website and what role it plays for their business in terms of their marketing. Many websites are lead generation or conversion-based websites so it’s really important that you’re factoring those conversion objectives into the entire project, meaning that you’re really guiding the visitors down a path towards encouraging them to take the next step and to contact the company or to reach out in any way shape or form. There’s a balance that needs to be struck between educating your visitors on what you do and also encouraging them to take the next step so that user experience or, that customer experience, is very important when you know designing a website for a tech company.
Inspirational sites can play a very important role so for all of our website projects we spend a fair amount of time finding the right inspirational sites so we can get some good ideas during the brainstorming phase and that can be very important when working with a tech company at all.
