So you have probably been on a website and seen in the address bar a little tiny lock or a little tiny key, might be green, it might be red. You might also see HTTPS in front of the website address. And all of those things mean that that website has purchased and installed an SSL certificate. So what is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate is a small key that is attached to that company’s domain name and the company information. It has to be purchased and verified. And what it does, is when the information is sent to the intended recipient that key is used to unlock the data because the data is sent in a gibberish. It’s encrypted so no one that intercepts it can hack the data. You don’t want anyone finding your information you send through forms or any other part of a website mid-route. You want it to get where it’s going and then be unencrypted for the intended person. So installing an SSL certificate is very important for credit card processing, very important for anything that uses your email or your name even, and especially contact information because hackers love to get their hands on any of that stuff.
